What Is the NACE Mentor Program?

The purpose of the Mentorship Program is to help NACE members share knowledge and ideas, gain expertise, and build their professional network. This is a two-person relationship with a mentor and a mentee.

The formal relationship lasts one year and will work best if the mentor and mentee meet face-to-face or virtually on a regular schedule (a minimum of one hour each month is recommended).  This opportunity will allow mentees to learn more about the profession overall as well as provide them with the chance to delve into any subject area that may be of interest.

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Application Process  

An application form for the program—both for those interested in serving as a mentor as well as those interested in being a mentee—is open until July 5.

Participants will be notified of their assignments in August. (Note: The Mentor Program team will assign matches based on the criteria detailed in your application.)

Once assignments are made, participants will be provided with a quick and easy guide to help them gain the most from the program.

Am I Eligible? 

           Mentors should have:

  • Five years or more professional experience in the career services or college recruiting profession. (Note: If you have less than five years of experience, you can still apply for consideration if you have a specific area of expertise to share.)
  • Expertise in the following areas: leadership, communication skills, strategic decision making, organizational skills and resource management.
  • The ability to provide insights into the profession to help guide the mentee.

Mentee should be:

  • New career services or employer professionals (less than one year to five years of experience).
  • New or current members who are transitioning from one profession to another.

Roles, Responsibilities, and Expectations

Mentor roles and responsibilities:

  1. Help the mentee to define, shape, and proactively take responsibility for pursuing his/her own professional development.
  2. Answer questions, take a personal interest, guide, encourage, and support the mentee.
  3. Commit to meeting monthly with the mentee.
  4. Prompt, encourage, and follow up as needed.
  5. Be dedicated to the program and committed to stay connected for one year.

Mentee roles and responsibilities:

  1. Set up initial introductory meeting to discuss topics you would like to cover as well as work out timing for subsequent meetings.
  2. Schedule and attend meetings with the mentor.
  3. Prepare for and lead the conversation with questions and discussion that helps you and your mentor meet professional goals
  4. Be dedicated to the program and committed to stay connected for one year.
